Time To Escape
They ran to the rails where other people were gathering. Women and children
were being loaded in to a life boat that was nearly full. Sally listened to a
man talking to his children, telling them to hold mummy’s hand and everything
will be alright.
“You need to get in that boat Sally.” Kian said when she face him.
“Not without you.” Sally said with fear in her eyes.
She reached her hand to his cheek and rested it there. They looked into each
others eyes, both pleading with each other.
“What are you still doing on this ship? The boat is nearly full!” shouted
Shane as he stopped by them. Sally quickly dropped her hand and their connection
was lost.
“You have to go Sally. Now.” Said Kian, worried that if they continued to
debate about this, the boat will lower without her. “I’ll be on the next boat,
right behind you.”
Shane looked between the two people and hated the connection between them. In
a low voice he said to Sally “They’re letting men board on the other side of the
ship. You need to get in now so that we get round and board ourselves. Now
Sally. There’s no question. Now!”
Sally looked at Kian as she was pulled away from him and being set into the
boat. She sat down on the seat with the woman and her children who’s husband is
still trying to calm them down.
A steward shouted “Lower away!” and the boat jolted and began to lower.
Sally never left eye contact with Kian even as tears started to fill her
eyes. She saw Shane talk to Kian.
“A good liar is needed in a time like this.” Said Shane.
“Like you?” Pointed out Kian
“You’re just as good. That painting will be worth a lot more in the
morning.”
Kian looked at Shane with the feeling of dread.
“I always win Kian. Always. But at least we had one common goal.”
“And what was that?”
Shane looked at Kian, feeling surprised by his own words when he said
“Getting Sally of this ship.”
Both men turned back to the lowering boat and Kian smiled reassuringly to
Sally.
Sally looked away and watched the ropes move. Without a second thought she
moved to the other side of the boat and leapt over to the ship. Her hand caught
the rail and she pulled herself over, only managing to get half of her body over
the railing. Two men helped her to safety while Kian watched in horror.
“No Sally! What are you doing?” Shouted Kian
He quickly turned and ran across the deck. He had to find her. He ran down
the stairs and carried on running until he saw her. She ran into his arms and
they kissed.
“You are so stupid Sally! You are such an idiot.” Kian said in between
kisses.
“You jump I jump, right?” Sally said
“Right.” They kissed again without knowing that Shane was watching them from
the top of the stairs.
Shane gripped the banister with his hands as he felt his heart break. Things
felt worse when we guided away by a man he knew but didn’t care to acknowledge,
until they were a few paces away from the stairs, Shane went into the man’s
jacket and pulled out a gun from the inside pocket. He aimed it at Kian who
spotted him in time to say “Get down!”
Sally ducked as tried to hold on to Kian’s shirt. Kian thought he had stepped
out of the way but the bullet hit him and he fell to the floor.
“No!” Sally shouted as she lunged herself over him. The bullet had pierced
his side but he was still breathing, his eyes were still open. Sally pressed her
hands to his side as hard as she could, but she couldn’t provide the right
pressure.
Suddenly she found herself being lifted up, her hands snapped away from the
wound. An arm was held tightly around her waist and she was getting dragged
away. The person holding her stopped at the bottom of the stairs and faced Kian.
“As I said, I always win. Always.”
“Shane you bastard! Let me go.” Sally said as she tried to free herself from
his hold.
“Sorry can’t do that. We’ve got a boat to catch.”
“No Kian!”
Sally struggled against Shane as they made their through the crowds. Shane
pushed his way through the lines of waiting people so he could get to the front.
“Women and children first sir.” Said the steward.
“We need to get on together so I can stop her from jumping back on here
again.” Snapped Shane.
“I’m sorry sir, but women and chil-” the steward stopped when Shane pointed
the gun at his neck.
“Let me get on with her and I’ll leave this gun behind. Stop me one more time
and you’ll be dead.”
“Very well sir. Please hurry.”
Shane lowered the gun and gave it to the steward. Then he pushed Sally
forward and watched her climb into the boat. The other passengers were terrified
of Shane and they tried to move away from him as he sat beside Sally. His arm
went around her waist and his hand held onto her tightly.
The steward called “Lower away!” once again and the boat jolted.
Sally wasn’t going to wait that long again, so when she managed to break away
from Shane’s hold, she leapt back onto the ship.
“Stupid Bitch!” Shane shouted as he watched her disappear into the crowd,
knowing she heading back to Kian. Knowing there wasn’t anything else for him to
do to win her back.
As the boat hit the water, the ropes were disconnected and the boat started
to drift away.
“Good luck my love.” Whispered Shane as he watched the Titanic become a
distance shape.
The end.
