Grandmother Ties Grandfather Lies
She ripped the letter in half and threw it into the burning flame. The
promises the words held were empty, emotionless. The words of her unknown
grandparents. Words that were used simply to get her to visit them. Little did
she know the hurt the unknown world would give her.
Amber and gold turned the paper into ashes as the minutes ticked by. Tears
began to threaten her vision as the words replayed themselves in her mind. Not
the words on paper but the words her grandfather had spoken mere hours ago. The
words came easily, hot and angered, giving her a chill up her spine. Could they
be true? Was he right?
A knock on the door echoed around the room and echoes in her mind. She wasn’t
in this world right now. She was back downstairs in the office, his words
filling her head to the point of over spill. As the door opened, the came
freely, continually. She only cried harder when she felt arms around her. A few
hours later the tears had finished and she begins to feel a wet patch under her
cheek. It was only then she realised her head was resting on someone’s shoulder.
Startled she pulled her head away and looked at the stranger beside her. Only
he wasn’t a stranger. She knew him.
“Tom.” She whispered as she wiped the remaining tears away from her cheeks
with the back of her hand.
She felt the softness of his fingers as he brushed back her black hair. Her
blue eyes were red and puffy with the look of loneliness and lost filling the
place of happiness.
“What are you doing here?” She asked
“Your grandmother told me what happened.” Tom said “So I came over straight
away. Don’t listen to what he said Amy. He doesn’t know you.”
“And you do?”
He smiled a little “I’d like to think so. Even if I have only known you for a
short while.”
Amy felt a little hope grow inside her. Tom had been supportive since the day
they met and she was grateful for him.
“Have you found out why they contacted you now?” He asked
Amy nodded slowly. “For the money.” She said sadly.
“And?” Questioned Tom, sensing more had been revealed.
“To keep me under lock and key now that they know I’m a result from a rape
attack.”
“I’m sorry. Are you going to them the money?”
She shrugged. “Should I?”
“Only you can decide that. Personally I would and leave. Let this be the only
contact you’ll have. At least with him anyway.”
His words replaced the ones of her grandfather and they helped her to form a
plan.

“Grandfather?” Any said with a shaky voice as she stands in the doorway of
his office.
The man stopped writing and looked up at her. His rounded figure looked
slimmer in his black suit. His brown hair was beginning to grey and was swept
back to cover a bold patch.
“Leave. Now.” He said and returned to his work.
“I have something for you.”
Her words caught his attention and he stops his work once again. With shaking
legs Amy made her way slowly to the desk and drops a fat envelope in front of
him. His eyes glinted with interest and he asked “What is it?”
“The money.” Amy said as she watched him snatch the envelope and peered
inside.
“All of it?”
“Every penny.”
“Glad you see things my way Amy. Now let’s put everything behind us.”
“Don’t think so.”
“Excuse me?” He looked at her with his penetrating blue eyes and she took a
step back.
“I’m leaving.” Amy said as confidently as she could.
“You’re not going anywhere!” He snapped.
“Yes she is.” Said Tom as he appeared from the corner.
Tom grabbed her hand and lead towards the front door. As they approached it,
Amy stopped when she saw her grandmother. With a sad smile Amy said “Goodbye
grandmother. It was nice to meet you.”
Her grandmother nodded once and turned to Tom “Take care of her.”
“I will Rose.” Said Tom
And as the door opened, Tom and Amy left the house, hand in hand.
