No More Heroes
Chapter 36
(Shane)
‘Shane stop it. You’re making me more nervous than I’m already am.’ whispered Mark
‘I’m sorry Mark. Knowing both Sally and Kelly are here…’ I said
‘It’s my wedding day. Keep your problems to yourself.’
‘I will. Or at least I’ll try.’
‘Thank you.’
Just as Mark finished talking, the music started playing. Everyone stood up and a few seconds later Tia appeared in the door way. I looked at Mark and he a
smile on his face. His eyes were an ocean of happiness, love and pride.
Then my eyes went to Kelly. My heart sank. We locked out eyes together and I saw the sadness Kelly was trying to hide. We might be friends… that’s the point, we’re only friends. The sadness is due to the ’just friendship’ relationship now. I’m more happy being with Sally but I do feel a bit guilty leaving Kelly.
But there’s no turning back, I’ve made up my mind and I’m staying with Sally.
Tia walked to Mark and stood next to him. They linked arms, turned to the vicar and the wedding began…
Everyone was celebrating the newly weds. Drinks were flowing, people were talking and laughter was heard. I saw Sally talking to a group of girls in one
of the corners of the tent. I made my way slowly to the group and when my eye met Sally’s, she said something to the girls and made her way over to me. We
meet in the middle and hugged each other.
‘I love you.’ I mumbled into Sally’s ear
‘I love you to.’ Sally whispered back
We pulled away from our hug then we held hands.
‘What were you talking about over there with the girls?’ I asked
‘My pregnancy. Wanted to know who the father was.’
‘And?’
You came just in time. I didn’t know how to answer.’
'Just say Richard. You’re not going to se those girls again.’
‘I don’t want to say Richard. I want to say you.’
‘I know we’ve agreed that I act as a father to your daughter…’
‘Shane you’ll be more then just acting. You’ll be the only father she’ll know.’
‘No point arguing with you. If you want me to her father I will. But Kevin comes first, always. He’ll come even before you.’
‘He’s your son, I wouldn’t expect anything less.’
I hugged her. That’s what I love about Sally, she’s completely understanding. Even if she wasn’t a mum-to-be, she would have said the exact same thing.
It was almost 10’o clock at night when a whit limo showed up. Mark had notice the limo arrive and went to find Tia. She was talking to Jess, Viv and Kelly.
‘Honey, the limo’s here.’ said Mark
‘Already?’ asked Tia ’I thought it wasn’t going to come until…’
Mark held up his wrist to show Tia the time. She looked at the time and said
’Oh. How time flies when you’re having fun.’
Tia knelt down and placed one had on Sophia and the other one on Kevin. Then she kissed Sophia on the forehead, then did the same to Kevin.
‘I’ll bring home something extra special for you two from my honeymoon.’ said Tia
She stood up, said goodbye to the girls and linked arms with Mark. They made their way to the limo and everyone followed. Sally and I were behind the crowd,
hearing excited chatter all around.
Mark opened the limo door. Both Mark and Tia wave at everyone, allowed a few photos to be taken and the got into the limo. The door closed and then the
window was down. The limo started to drive away and everyone shouted ’Bye!’
Mark and Tia continued to wave at everyone until they were out of site. The crowd started to part and everyone started talking. After a while people started
to leave. Soon the only people who were left were the caters who had the fun job of cleaning up.
Chapter 37
(Sally)
Mark and Tia are on their honeymoon. Kian, Viv and Sophia are on holiday. Nicky, Jess and Kelly are on the other side of the country. Kevin is being
looked after by his grandparents, Shane’s parents. Where are Shane and I? In the hospital, waiting for news about my new born. When the baby was finally out, she wasn’t crying. In fact we were told she wasn’t breathing, but she had a pulse. So here I was laying on the bed with my head buried into Shane’s bare chest. Poor Shane… he had only just come out of the shower when I started to go into labour. He managed to get into his boxer shorts and jeans before he found himself helping me down the stairs.
I found myself laughing at the memory and Shane said ’What’s so funny?’
I pulled myself away from his embrace and looked at him. The I said ’What happened this morning.’
‘What happened this morning?’
‘You coming out of the shower. Only managing to get your boxer shorts and jeans on.’
‘I wasn’t going to waist time trying to find a shirt and do up the buttons.’
‘Shane, just see the funny side.’
‘I do… I’m sorry. I have to admit, I’m pretty cold.’
‘You can go home and get a shirt on…’
‘I’m not leaving you. Not until we hear news about your daughter.’
Just as I put my head against Shane’s chest once more, the nurse came carrying a crying baby girl. I immediately sat up and was eager to hold my
daughter. As the nurse placed her in my arms, tears were filling my eyes.
'She looks more like her mother then her father.’ Said Shane
I just smiled. In fact I didn’t even look at Shane. I kept my eyes on my daughter.
‘I’ll leave you three alone for a while.’ said the nurse
‘Thank you.’ I simply said
A couple of hours later I found myself asleep. Shane went back home to put a shirt on and no doubt he’s ringing everyone, telling them of our news. There was
no need to think about names. I had that all sorted out. If I had a girls she was going to be called Lilly, if I had a baby boy he was going to be called
Tommy. Two names I love.
While my dreams troubled me, I slept on. It was only when I felt a hand on my back that my eyes slowly opened. I didn’t need to look to see who it was. Just
one single touch of hi fingers and I knew it was Shane. I allowed him to run his fingers up and down my back.
‘You got a shirt on?’ I asked
‘A shirt and a jumper.’ Shane said ‘You got a name for your daughter?’
‘Of course.’
‘Lilly?’
‘How’d you guess?’
‘You’ve always loved that name. If I remember you called a favourite teddy of yours Lilly. Do you still have him?’
‘Yes. I kept her for when I have a daughter of my own. Now that I do…’
‘I know. I called the guys, they’re all very excited. The only pair I couldn’t reach is Mark and Tia.’
‘They are in Hawaii Shane. Though I’m sure Kian would find a way to get in contact with him.’
‘True.’
‘Did you bring Kevin?’
‘He was fast asleep, I didn’t want to wake him. I’ll bring him tomorrow.’
‘OK.’ I said sleepily
I allowed my eyes to close. I felt Shane kiss my cheek and heard him softly say ’I love you.’ Then I felt him go of the bed. AS I went into sleep I heard
the door shut softly. A smile crept on my face and I was aware it stayed there.
Most of my heroes of my life have gone. Some willing to go, some held on, some being forced to leave when they were hurt. But I’ve got one last hero
remaining. A hero who is always there when my other heroes weren’t. One thing I’ve learnt over the last year is: you’re never alone when there no more heroes.
There is always a hero for you out there somewhere. You just need to let them back into your life.
