Chapter 31
(Sally)
‘So what can I get you for breakfast?’ said Shane
‘I don’t know,’ I paused and looked around the room before I looked at him and said ‘How about you?’
Shane had come out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. He just had a shower.
‘Sally I can’t stay. Kelly and Kevin are coming home today. I need to be there.’
‘Why do you have to be a good daddy?’
'Natural I guess.’
Shane walked back to the bed and kissed my growing belly. Then he said 'Hopefully I’ll be a good daddy to this little one.’
‘You will be Shane.’
‘Now if you excuse me, I need to get dressed. Then I’ll start on breakfast.’
‘OK.’
Shane kissed me softly before he left the room. I sighed deeply and fell back against the pillows. It’s been 10 days since Kelly gave birth to Kevin. Shane
has been going backwards and forwards from the hospital. 3 days he stayed there all day, 1 day he stayed at home. This allowed us to catch up on the things
we’ve missed. And last night made it official that Shane and I are back together. This time forever.
I got out of bed and walked into the bathroom for a shower.
An hour later I was dressed and made my way down the stairs. I could hear the sound of a frying pan and the vocals of the Westlife lads. It’s a song I haven’t
heard before; I guess he’s listening to their new album. When I stepped into the kitchen, Shane was serving breakfast. We both had the same, all day breakfast, but I had toast and Shane had fried bread.
‘You’re just in time. Breakfast is served.’ Said Shane
Shane places the plates on the table and went to turn the music off. I sat down at the table and waited for Shane to sit down, when he did, we started
eating.
‘Are you coming to the hospital today then?’ Shane asked
‘I don’t know.’ I said
'Sally I can tell you miss Kelly’s company. And truthfully I think she misses you.’
‘I just… I just don’t… it doesn’t feel right.’
‘How would you know? I know last time she started a fight but still. Come on, please? Do it for me?’
I looked at him. He was giving me puppy dog eyes, pleading me. I can never say now when he does that.
‘OK Shane, for you.’
'That’s my girl. We’ll go after breakfast.’
‘OK.’
Shane let me out of the car just outside the hospital entrance. He’s told me to go in while he went to park the car. But why am I not moving? So this might be the same hospital I was brought to when the car crashed and my mother just so happens to have died here… what difference would it make? Even though I tell myself those things don’t matter, I’m still not moving.
‘Thought I told you to go in.’ I heard Shane say
I turned round and there he was. He placed his arm on my waist and I leant against him.
‘Sally, at the end of the day it's just a hospital. Your history here is well… history. Stop looking in the past.’
‘You’re right,’ I sad ‘you’re always right Shane. I just can’t go in there.’
‘Maybe not on your own. If you had somebody with you, it might be different.’
‘Whatever you say Shane is going to be right.’
‘So, do you want to make that first step together?’
‘With you by my side I’m always ready to take the first step.’
‘Then let’s go in.’
We took the first step together and the next thing I knew I was inside the hospital. Viv, Kian and Sophia, Nicky and Jess, Chloe, Tia and Mark were all
huddled together in one corner of the waiting room.
‘Let’s see what’s going on. Mind you, think I can guess.’ Said Shane
So could I. Shane held tightly to my hand as we walked to the little gathering. Mark was the first one to see us. He smiled and said ‘Thought I heard
you two talking.’
‘Hi Mark. Let me guess… Kelly?’ said Shane
‘Wrong. Kevin actually.’
‘Wasn’t too far off.’
Mark and I laughed. That was when I heard the little cry of baby Kevin. Mark allowed Shane and I in and I saw Kevin for the first time since he was born.
Kelly had him in her arms, now trying to stop him crying. Shane went to stand next to Kelly and took Kevin into his arms. At once Kevin stopped crying.
Chapter 32
(Shane)
‘I’m going for a walk in the garden.’ Said Sally
'OK.’ I said. We kissed and I said ‘See you later.’
'Yeah.’
We’ve only just come home from the hospital and I’m already watching Sally walking in the other direction from Kelly. There was a lot of tension between
them at the hospital and in the car. I hope one day soon they’ll realise how much they missed each other. But then I think they have realised but neither of
them wants to admit it. I could play messenger but I want them to become friends again on their own.
‘Shane.’ Said Kelly ‘What’s wrong?’
I looked at Kelly and said ‘Nothing. Why?’
‘You were staring into space.’
‘Was I?’
‘You obviously need some sleep.’
‘Kelly I’m fine. I was just thinking.’
‘About Sally?’
‘Actually both of you. The tension didn’t go unnoticed Kelly.’
‘What tension?’
‘Kelly,’ I said firmly ‘You know what I’m talking about.’
‘It was thinking and besides I don’t want to talk about it in front of Kevin.’
‘Fine but you can’t deny it for much longer.’
‘Deny what?’
‘You know what.’
‘I’m taking Kevin in the house. Then I might go and have some rest.’
Kelly picked up Kevin and carried him in her arms into the house. I watched her until she closed the front door behind her.
‘And the roller coaster ride begins.’ I said
Two weeks later and I was dropping Sally of at the shopping centre. Some how Sally was talked into going to Tia and Mark’s wedding and now she needs to get her dress.
‘And don’t forget if you see anything you like and it’s over your budget, use my credit card.’ I said
‘Only if your sure Shane.’ Said Sally ‘It’s only a one day dress anyway.’
‘Sally treat yourself.’ I said handing her my credit card
‘OK.’ Sally took the card and kissed me before continuing ‘I’ll see you later Shane.’
‘Give me a call when you’re finished.’
‘OK. Thanks Shane.’
‘No problem.’
Sally gave me another kiss and got out of the car.
When I got home I could hear crying. And it wasn’t Kevin. I walked to the kitchen and saw Kelly sitting crossed legged on the floor and crying. I went
over to her, knelt down and placed my hand on her shoulder. Then I asked ‘What’s wrong?’
‘Why am I so mean to Sally?’ asked Kelly, through her tears
How could I answer that? I had only one conclusion.
‘Perhaps it’s time to finally admit you miss her friendship.’
‘That can’t be it Shane.’
'I’m sorry Kelly but I’m out of options on how to answer that question. You need to realise that you miss Sally. You’re mean to her because you miss
her.’
‘How can she still want to be my friend after all I’ve done to her?’
‘She forgives easily. Sometimes I wish she doesn’t but that’s the kind of person she is. Just talk to her Kelly.’
‘I’ll try.’
‘All you can do is try.’
Chapter 33
(Sally)
Dear Richard,
I hope you are well and are enjoying your new life. And I hope you have found love in someone new. I know I have.
Shane and I are back together, but you may have already guess but I’m telling you personally and to make it official.
I’m sending a copy of my latest scan. The baby is getting bigger everyday; I can’t wait to hold it. I just wish you could have at least had a relationship
with your child, if not with not me. I’m not wishing too hard or everyday because I’ve lost all faith in you…
I heard a knock on the door and I quickly put my pen and writing pad away. No one knows I write to Richard once a month. I don’t know why since I never hear
from him. Not one single letter back. But I’ve never expected one.
Another knock was heard then I said ‘Come in.’
The door opened and I saw Kelly standing in the door frame. I had thought it was Shane but I looked outside my bedroom window and saw Shane sitting on the grass with his back against a tree, holding Kevin. A smile came to my lips. Both of them look so angel like, Kevin fast asleep with a peaceful look on his face and Shane… he’s my angel in more ways then just one.
Kelly coughed and I was brought back into the room. I was too busy looking at Shane and Kevin that I forgot Kelly was there.
‘Sorry Kelly,’ I said ‘got caught looking at Shane outside.’
‘I know what you mean. My eyes turn towards the window when I know he’s outside.’ Said Kelly
‘I wonder if he knows.’
‘I think he does. Sometimes he’ll put on a show because he knows you’re watching.’
'Same old Shane. Anyway Kelly come in and sit down.’
Kelly came in and closed the door softly behind her. She then walked to the bed, which was in the middle of the room, and sat down on the edge. I swivelledmy chair around to be able to face Kelly. Now the real conversation starts.
‘What’s up Kelly?’ I said
I felt like this was an interview more then a casual conversation. I felt I was the interviewer and poor Kelly was the interviewee. The atmosphere that was
once chilled has become tensed. When ever Kelly and I were in a room together, something always happened.
‘I just wanted to talk to you.’ Said Kelly
‘What about?’
‘Us.’
‘In what way?’
Kelly swallowed hard as if this was painful for her. Then she said ‘What used to our friendship.’
I starred at her. I blinked a few times before I was able to say ‘Our friendship… used to be our friendship. Kelly what are you talking about?’
‘I shouldn’t say this but Shane believes our fighting, well my fighting, is caused by the fact that we miss each other.’
‘I thought our fighting was happening because we hated each other. But Shane’s usually right. I guess both of us have been in denial.’
‘So, call it deuce and start again? I know Shane wants to make you Kevin’s aunt but only if we work things out. I can’t imagine anyone else being a better
aunt then you. Please say we can be friends again.’
I looked at her. She was pleading through her eyes. My eyes travelled to the window and saw Shane. He was still sitting on the grass, with his back against the tree. The only difference was Kevin was asleep next to him with Shane’s arm around him.
I looked back at Kelly and sighed. Then I said ‘OK Kelly. Let’s start over.’
Kelly smiled and came over to me. Then she hugged me. Feeling the warmth of her hug, I couldn’t help myself and hugged her back. If I was going to be
Kevin’s aunt then I want Kelly to be my child’s aunt.
Chapter 34
(Shane)
Today’s the day. Tia and Mark will tie the knot this afternoon. The girl’s are round Tia’s house while the lads and I are round Kian’s. Viv has taken
Sophia and Kelly had Kevin. All the lads are thinking the girls are getting ready now. Perhaps they are. Or they might be taking this time to gossip. The
girls haven’t had the chance to get information from Sally recently. We came back from a two week holiday in Rome just the other day. It’s been complete
silence from us since we didn’t send any postcards. But everyone enjoyed our gifts and all was forgiven.
‘Shane!’ shouted Mark
I almost fell of the chair I was sitting on. Mark had practically shouted in my ear. If I hadn’t grabbed on to the shelf, I would’ve fallen of. Mark could
have damaged his best man.
‘Mark, why did you shout in my ear?’ I asked sternly, balancing myself back on the chair
‘You didn’t respond to anything else.’ Said Mark
‘What?’
‘You were out of it. Mind completely empty.’
I looked at him. I was a little bit confused. Then I realised what he was talking about. I said ‘Sorry Marky. I was thinking about what the girls could be
doing. Then I got distracted by my holiday.’
‘The girls are getting ready, that’s what they’re doing.’ Said Kian
‘Possibility of some gossip time.’ Said Nicky
‘That’s what I was thinking Nicky.’ I said ‘They’ll try to get information from Sally about Rome.’
‘Anything to be ashamed of?’
I just looked at him. No there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Just a couple of nights of enjoyable catching up. I think Nicky saw something in my eyes for he
quickly changed the subject ‘When are the cars coming Mark?’
‘In about 4 hours.’ Said Mark
'I’m going to look for my cuff links. Couldn’t find them when I got up this morning. No doubt it will take me a while to find them.’
‘I’ll help you Nicky.’ Said Kian ‘It’s easier and quicker if two people
look.’
‘I’m capable of looking myself Kian.’
‘Still quicker if two people looked.’
Nicky went out of the room, stomping his feet along the way. When he got to the stairs he stopped and waited for Kian. Kian sighed deeply and left the room.
When he got to the stairs, Nicky started to run. Kian joined him in the running and the next thing we heard was a door closing.
3 hours later and we were all dressed in our tuxedos. Mark was wearing mostly white. His tie and shoes were black. Nicky, Kian and I were wearing black
tuxedos with a white shirt, black tie and shoes.
‘Stupid shoe laces!’ said Nicky loudly
Nicky was having trouble doing his shoe laces up. If he wasn’t careful he could break them.
‘Here,’ I said kneeling down in front of Nicky ‘Let me do them.’
A few seconds later and Nicky’s shoe laces were done up. I stood up and said'There you go. What was so hard about that?’
‘Very funny Filan.’ Said Nicky
‘How you feeling Mark?’ asked Kian
‘Nervous. Extremely nervous.’
‘Natural mate.’ I said ‘Everything will go fine. The only thing that can’t go to plan is the weather. But it’s supposed to be a nice sunny day anyway.’
‘For the location it needs to be a sunny day.’
‘Agree with you there.’
In less then an hour the cars will be coming to pick us up. Mark’s not the only one who’s nervous. Deep down, where no one can see, I’m just as nervous.
But I’m only the best man, so why am I nervous?
Chapter 35
(Sally)
We are just waiting for the cars to show up. I’ve had a text message from Shane, saying they’re on the way. Tia is slightly panicking, but who can blame
her? The cars are already 2 minutes late.
‘Where are they?’ said Tia
‘Don’t worry they’ll be here soon.’ said Viv ‘Perhaps there’s traffic.’
‘If there was they wouldn’t already picked up the lads.’ I said
‘How do you know they’ve been picked up?’ asked Jess
‘Shane text me saying they’re on the way.’
‘Stupid cars!’ said Tia
‘Tia relax. As Viv said, they’ll be here soon.’
‘I think they’re coming down the road now.’ said Kelly
We all went to the window and saw two white cars driving down the road. Then they came to a stop, just outside the house.
‘Told you they’ll be here soon.’ said Viv
‘Finally!’ said Tia
‘Who’s going in which car?’ asked Kelly
‘One’s for the parent’s and the other one for… non-parents. Doesn’t matter which one. Just get in on!’
Kelly and Viv picked the first car placed Kevin and Sopiha into their baby seats. Once the kids were taken care of, Kelly and Viv got in. A few seconds
later the car drove away. Myself, Jess and Tia got into the second car.. As we drove we sat in silence. Our minds going over what we need to do.
Kelly and Jess were wearing the same dress since they were both bridesmaids. The dress was light turquoise, had no straps and went down to the knees. They were also wearing the same shoes, black high-heeled. Tia had gone for the traditional white dress. But this one had a hint of pale pink sequences that
glimmer when the light shines on them. As for me, I am wearing a lilac colour dress that goes to the ankles. It had one thin strap on the left shoulder. We
all had our hair done up in the same style. A ballerina type bun.
Horns are honking, people are shouting. We are now stuck in traffic and we’ve still got about 15 miles to go. I could just make out the car that Kelly and Viv
were in. they were only three cars in front of us.
‘Oh come on people!’ said Tia
‘Calm down Tia.’ said Jess ’We’ve still got time.’
‘On who’s watch? I’m going to be late for my own wedding.’
‘Tia take this time to get some sleep. You hardly got any last night.’ I said ’By the time you wake up, we’ll be there.’
‘OK. Wake me up when we get there.’
‘Tia!’ shouted Jess
Tia bolted awake and looked a little startled. I couldn’t help but smile.
‘What?’ asked Tia
‘We’re here.’ said Jess calmly
‘Seriously?’
‘Seriously. And with 10 minutes to spare.’
‘Oh good, I can get my make-up sorted out.’
Tia got out of the car and headed towards the white tent. Jess and I looked at each other and then followed Tia. I went straight to the seats, since I was
just a guest. There was one space left, at the end of the second row.
As I made my way to the seat, I saw Shane standing next to Mark. It brought a smile to my face seeing Shane in his tuxedo. But then I noticed he was playing
with his collar. Mark was trying to stop him, when Shan was nervous you couldn’t stop him. Why was he nervous? Then it hit me as I sat down. When this wedding was organised Shane was with Kelly but now he’s with me. Can’t really imaging what’s going through his mind right now. But no doubt he’ll find it hard to chose which girl to look at.
