No More Heros
Chapter 16
(Shane)
I followed Nicky down the hall way to the conservatory. Mark and Richard were close behind. When we got there we saw the girls have moved from the kitchen into the conservatory. It took me a while to realise Sally hasn’t come in.
‘Where’s Sally?’ I asked
‘You said Sally was here,’ said Kelly ‘But I haven't seen her.’
‘She might still be in the car.’ Said Richard
‘I’ll go and look for her.’ I suggested ‘I know the area better then you Richard.’
‘Funny, considering I sold this house.’
‘Is there any land your company hasn’t brought?’
‘They’ve brought a few… but there is still a lot of Ireland to buy.’
‘Don’t know why you haven’t just brought the company.’
I turned to leave the conservatory when I heard the front door close. A few seconds later, we saw Sally. Her eyes were red. She’s been crying but why?
‘Where have you been?’ asked Richard, a bit too coldly
‘In the car.’ Said Sally
‘Why?’
‘No real reason.’
She’s been crying you idiot! How can you not see that? I wanted to scream at him but I controlled myself.
Once we were all seated and all have a cup of tea, Richard said ‘I’m sure a few of us know why I and Sally are here.’
‘Sally’s always welcome. You’re a different story.’ Said Kelly
‘It’s not our house Kelly.’ I said
‘Still.’
‘Anyway,’ Richard continued ‘We do have news to give you. Two of you already know this because Sally already told you.’
A piercing look at me then he carried on ‘Sally and I have been together for 5 years and as everyone knows Sally recently moved in. Well now we’re going to be a family.’
Wrong words to use mate. She’s pregnant, not getting married to you!
‘What do you mean “going to be a family”?’ asked Jess
‘Richard’s not very good with words away from business.’ Said Sally ‘Richard and I are expecting a baby… I’m pregnant.’
Kelly chose the wrong time to pick up her cup. It crashed to the floor and broke. Nicky didn’t storm out this time but his eyes were black, no emotion or anything could be seen. In that second of looking at Nicky, Kelly had thrown a cushion at Richard and started attacking Sally. I ran to stop Kelly but ended up with a bleeding nose…
‘I’m sorry Shane. I don’t know what came over me.’ Said Kelly
‘Hatred.’ I said ‘And a long lost desire.’
Kelly just smiled and continued to clean my nose. Before Richard dumped Kelly, she wanted to have his baby. Kelly was a year older then Sally and didn’t think much about a career or what to do after school. She just wanted to be a young mum. But Richard wasn’t a bit interested and dumped her. Then about 3 months later, Kelly had her eyes on me regardless the fact that I was her best
friend’s boyfriend. But by that time Westlife were getting known really well.
I know Kelly hates the fact that Sally is now having Richard’s child. I hate it just as much, probably even more. I was a father when I was 18! I still can’t understand why Sally never told me till now. Is there another secret she has yet to tell me? One day all these secrets will reveal and damage the happy lives we’re living now. Friendships will be broken, relationships broken into millions
of pieces which will be hard to fix.
I’m already lost in a love triangle. A desire so strong I’m willing to lose everything right here, right now. But I’m hoping this desire is only passing through. Kelly is my world and she is having my baby. I can’t leave her like I left Sally. I learnt my lesson back then; I don’t want to learn it again.
Chapter 17
(Sally)
Why am I always in the right place at the wrong time? Nicky bumping into me last night and Kelly fighting earlier. All because I’ve said I’m pregnant. What would have happened, back when I was 16, if I had announced my pregnancy back then? A much happier reception… well I can dream. No doubt Kelly would have been jealous since she wanted a baby. That was why Kelly was with Richard in the first place.
After 10 years not seeing each other, my feelings are reappearing. With Shane looking at me the way he was when I came in, he saw I had been crying. I wanted to run into his arms and kiss him and cry till I fell asleep. That’s all I want to do, cry. Last night was a mistake. I should have been stronger and stop him. But I wanted it just as much. It took me all the way back to prom night…
‘Earth to Sally,’ said Jess, clicking her fingers ‘Sally are you in there?’
I got so lost in my thoughts that I had forgot where I was and who I was sitting with.
‘I’m here Jess.’ I said
‘You were completely out of it.’
‘Sorry I was thinking.’
‘About what?’
‘Nothing important.’ I lied
I couldn’t say what I was thinking since Kelly was in the room. As much as I wanted to tell Jess everything, I didn’t want her to be the “piggy-in-the-middle”.
‘Anyway,’ said Jess ‘We’ve decided on a white wedding for Tia.’
‘I thought Tia wanted a white wedding anyway.’ I said
‘Actually I don’t know what I want.’ Said Tia
‘No childhood dreams about weddings?’
‘No. Back then I doubted that I will never have a boyfriend. But Mark changed that.’
‘Ok, white wedding it is then. What about location?’
‘I was thinking local.’
‘As in Ireland?’ asked Jess
‘Yes, just don’t know where though.’ Said Tia
‘Shane and I are free tomorrow,’ said Kelly ‘We can show you the best places in Ireland. And Shane knows certain contacts which helps.’
‘Sounds like fun. Just need to tell Mark.’
‘Shane would have suggested it.’
‘Not with Richard in the room.’ I said ‘I can work the areas you’re thinking about Kelly and Richard’s company owns one.’
‘Since when?’’
‘Since last year. Richard kept boosting about it.’
‘Great, that’s one of the list. Which one is it?’
‘The place we used to go to for walk after having dinner out.’
‘Oh man! That was going to be the first place as well.’
‘Sorry Kels.’
Kels, haven’t said that in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, I’ve missed Kelly’s company. After all, we knew each other by heart. Best friend’s all the way through school. It just took one night to ruin everything. A friendship lost and a relationship broken. The friendship can be found again, but the relationship can never be fixed. Not now and not in the future.
‘Hi guys.’ Said Jess when Mark and Richard came into the room
Mark went to Tia and gave her a kiss and Richard did the same to me. But I was wondering where Nicky and Shane were.
‘Where’s Nicky and Shane?’ I asked Richard
‘They’ve gone upstairs.’ Said Richard
‘Apparently Shane wants to talk to Nicky in private.’ Said Mark ‘About what I don’t know.’
It had better not be what I think it is. I’m hoping those 2 have got a strong friendship that more than truth telling will be able to break.
Chapter 18
(Shane)
When Nicky and I were in Nicky’s bedroom, I closed the door. Nicky had already seated himself on the edge of the bed.
‘Listen Shane,’ said Nicky ‘I’m sorry for leaving you there last night. I should’ve stayed.’
‘Don’t worry about it Nicky.’ I said ‘I think I know why. And besides Sally and I were able to talk.’
‘About what?’
‘About a certain secret Sally has kept since she was 16.’
‘What kind of secret?’
Nicky suddenly felt uncomfortable. I know because of his change of tone and because he started to play with his shirt.
‘She was pregnant when she was 16. I was a father and she never told me.’ I said
‘I’m sure she had a good reason for not telling you Shane.’
‘Her reason was Westlife. She wanted me to have my dream.’
‘I guess that’s a good reason.’
‘Just wish she told me back then.’
‘What would have happened if she did tell you?’
‘I don’t know Nicky. I thought about it and I don’t know. But then things began to… change.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘I’m just going to come out and say it. My feelings for Sally are coming back.’
‘What kind of feelings?’
‘Umm… I think I’m falling in love with her again.’
‘You’re with Kelly now. And besides how do you know you’re falling in love with her again?’
How can I answer that? I should just be honest and tell the truth. It’s just finding the right words to use.
‘Basically…’ I began ‘Sally and I kind of… well… we shared the night together.’
‘What? You mean you slept with her last night?’
‘That’s one way of putting it.’
‘Shane! I knew it was a mistake leaving you there. You’re going to ruin your relationship with Kelly if you continue.’
‘That’s the thing, I don’t want to continue but these feelings are getting stronger by the second!’
‘Then you need to tell Kelly.’
‘I can’t… I’m afraid.’
‘The longer you leave it…’
‘I know, the harder it will be. I just don’t want to lose her.’
‘Then tell her. Yes it’s going to be hard, but it’s better to tell sooner then later.’
‘I know. I won’t tell her today. Not after Sally’s news and she’s enjoying the wedding planning. I’ll tell her tomorrow, that way I’ve got tonight to work out what to say.’
‘As long as you tell her. You don’t want to go through it again.’
‘No I don’t.’
An hour had past while Nicky and I were talking. We went downstairs and joined the others. It sounded as they were exchanging details for the wedding. And by the sound of things Kelly has volunteered to do something tomorrow. I just hope it doesn’t have me tagged along.
‘There you are,’ said Kelly ‘I’ve just told Mark that we can show him and Tia some of the best places in Ireland.’
‘We? You mean like you and I?’ I asked
‘Yes. We’re both free.’
‘I was going to do some shopping tomorrow Kelly.’
‘Well the shopping can wait. We’ve got less then six months to help Mark and Tia.’
‘Ok I’ll cancel tomorrow but next time check with me before you suggest anything.’
‘Well, you weren’t in the room.’
‘Anybody want drinks?’ asked Nicky
Everybody answered yes. Well almost everybody. Richard and Sally had moved themselves away from the group. Why I don’t know, but it looks like they were in deep conversation. I shock of the feeling of wanting to kiss Sally and joined Kelly.
Chapter 19
(Sally)
‘I think it’s time we left.’ Said Richard
‘Why?’ I asked
‘We don’t want to hit afternoon traffic.’
‘The last time we left at this time, I landed in hospital.’
‘That was different. And anyway you need to get over your fear.’
‘Richard, please.’
‘I’ve got work in the morning, so we need to leave now.’
‘I’m not ready to leave.’
‘How many times do we have to go through this? We need to leave now, simple.’
Richard stood up and waited for me to do the same. In the end I gave up and stood up. That’s when everyone looked at us.
‘Where are you two going?’ asked Nicky
‘It’s time for us to go.’ Said Richard ‘We don’t want to hit afternoon traffic.’
‘Ok, then let me show you out.’
‘You don’t have to Nicky.’
‘It’s my house, and I always see people out.’
‘Lead the way.’
We followed Nicky out of the room. I couldn’t help myself, I looked at Shane. When I left the room, I looked back. Some how I felt this was the final goodbye. With a baby on the way and Richard being promoted, I will not be seeing him again. It can only be a good thing. We will not be able to fall in love.
An hour later, Richard and I were home. All the way through the journey I could sense another reason why he wanted to come home. And it had nothing to do with the afternoon traffic.
‘Richard,’ I said ‘what’s the real reason you wanted to come home? It’s got nothing to do with the afternoon traffic.’
Richard placed his coat on the hook which was by the door, and then he looked at me. His eyes were black and the temperature turned cold. Trouble entered the house with us.
‘I over heard Shane and Nicky.’ Said Richard ‘You slept with him.’
'What? What the hell are you talking about?’ Although I already knew
‘Don’t act all dumb. You know for well what I’m talking about. You slept with Shane last night!’
‘It wasn’t supposed to happen Richard!’
‘Like hell! You waited for your first opportunity to get him over here.’
‘I asked him over so I could tell him face to face that I’m pregnant. When I asked him, you weren’t called back to work. Everything just happened.’
‘Fate I guess. Fate lead Shane to you just to him you’re pregnant? Like I’m going to believe that!’
‘Fate hasn’t got anything to do with this. Our feelings just took over. We both should have been stronger but… we both wanted to do it.’
‘Get out!’
‘What?’
‘Get out! And stay out. I don’t want anything to do with you!’
‘But Richard…’
‘Don’t “but” me. Just get out. And stay out of my live!’
I did walk out. I even slammed the door.
I walked down the street with my hands in my coat pocket. My mind was whirling with the event that just happened. But I was thinking where I could go. I couldn’t go back to Nicky’s, I would have to explain and I didn’t want to. There was only one other option. And that was to call Kian Egan and ask to stay for the night. But I didn’t want to intrude his little family. But where else
have I got to go?
Chapter 20
(Shane)
How can Sally not be at Richard’s? I mean she left here with him. I wanted to play safe and make sure that Sally had gotten home safely. I called the house number, expecting to hear Sally’s voice but I was surprised. Richard had answered and told me Sally wasn’t there and put the phone down. Am I going to believe him or assume something else? Right now I believe him. I just want to
know where she is.
But at the moment I’m trying to work out what to say to Kelly. Nicky’s right; I need to tell her what happened, no matter what the outcome. I’m praying our relationship can survive. As long as I tell the truth and be completely honest, we should survive. But how can I tell her? Where should I begin? I can’t start by saying ‘Sally told me a secret she has kept since she’s 16.’ That would give
Kelly the wrong impression…
I joined Kelly outside and sat down next to her. I held her hand in mine and looked at the sky. It was late evening and the sun was still shining.
‘Beautiful evening.’ Said Kelly
‘Sure is.’ I said
Kelly seemed peaceful. I can tell she is in her happy place. How long that will last I don’t know.
‘Kelly I’ve got something I need to tell you.’
‘What’s that? Nothing bad I hope.’
‘Something bad… possibly worse. Depending on your views.’
‘Shane, what is it?’
‘Ok… Sally and I- Sally and I slept with…’
‘Whoa, what? You and Sally slept? I take it with each other?’
‘Kelly, I’m sorry.’
‘When did it happen?’
‘Last night.’
‘Last night? You should’ve come home with Nicky.’
‘If he stayed, yes I would have done. He just stormed out and took the car. And besides I wanted to leave before anything happened.’
‘Why didn’t you?’
‘Sally stopped me. At first we were hugging each other. Then we found ourselves kissing.’
Kelly turned away from me. She’s trying to hide her tears, but I’ve already seen them. I placed my hands on her shoulders and looked at the sky.
‘Kelly, I’m sorry. I should have been stronger and stop her.’
‘Did it mean anything?’
‘Truthfully I don’t know. A part of me is saying yes and another part is saying no. I’ve had some time to think about this and I’m following my heart.’
‘And?’
‘I’m not leaving you.’
Kelly turned to look at me. Her eyes were full of tear and yet they were showing hope.
‘You’re not leaving?’ asked Kelly
‘No. Sally means something to me. She’s more of a close friend now. You’re the one I love Kelly. You’re my world. I should not have slept with Sally, and I’m sorry I did. Kelly, I can’t lose you. You mean everything. Everything.’
‘Shane… just promise me one thing.’
‘Anything Kelly. Just name it.’
‘Don’t sleep with her again. I might not be too forgiving next time.’
‘I’m not planning to. I don’t want to hurt you like I did her.’
‘Good. I might be forgiving you now…’
‘I know. Do I get brownie points for telling you sooner?’
‘Don’t push it.’
‘Didn’t think so. Oh well, can’t blame a man for trying.’
‘You mean you can’t blame a cheat for trying.’
‘That hurt but I deserved.’
‘Glad you see it that way.’
‘Kiss and make up?’
‘Don’t even think it Shane Filan. You’re sleeping on the sofa tonight.’
‘Kiss and make up tomorrow then.’
‘That’s more like it.’
Kelly playfully tapped her hand on my cheek and walked into the house. I might be sleeping on the sofa tonight and we might be kissing and making up tomorrow, at least there is a tomorrow for us.
