Chapter 2
As he walked beside me, I’m twisting my wrists this way and that, in an
attempt to loosen the rope that bound my wrist. Soon he came behind me and I
felt his hands take of my wrists and we stopped walking.
It was like he knew where a secret hole was in the dress, his hand slipped
through the material easily and he tugged at the rope. To my disappointment he
didn’t undo the knot, he only made it tighter.
“We need to keep the rope on.” He whispered into my ear, a small shiver going
through my body. “It’s precaution my dear. we’ve been tricked before now and
we’re not letting that happen again.”
“You can’t seriously believe that I’ll suddenly attack.” I said, surprised to
hear my own voice, even if it is shaky.
“Looks can be deceiving. One girl, like yourself, acted all innocent. Then a
week later she attacked. We barely survived. We’re not taking another
chance.”
He softly nudge me forward and I swallowed, finding a lump in the back of my
throat. I wasn’t going to cry, I didn’t need to. The lump is just there,
threatening.
The path seems to be endless. It’s and smooth and has the overgrown grass on
either side. The only way anyone could be able to see us would be from the air.
Even then it would be a second glance to know there’s someone moving in amongst
the grass. The path is smooth for a few reasons: 1- the ground was flat and the
grass was so well trampled on that it’s flattened down. 2- It’s straight,
there’s no twists and turns and no corners. 3- there’s no hills to go up and
down. It’s just straight and smooth and continuous.
Finally I begin to see a silhouette of a building It seemed to have all kinds
of levels, it’s up and down making it first appear to be a zigzag in the sky.
The more I look at it the more the zigzag turned into something different. One
part was much taller than the next, while one is so tiny that you don’t know if
you’re imagining it or not.
As we continued walking, the zigzag turned into more of a defined shape. The
tallest part looked like the top of a church, or a bell tower. As we got nearer
I became excited, intrigued to see what lies ahead of me as a bridge came into
view and the sound of running water can be heard from somewhere near.
We stopped just under the bridge whish was dark and cold. Then something
sounded from behind me, a loud sound but it wasn’t a bang or something being
closed. It sounded like metal being hit against the wall and being echoed
through the room. I took a chance and glanced behind me. I caught a large
sliding down door that was just about to touch the ground. There’s no going back
now.
“You might want to stand straight and put your feet together.” He said, his
voice vibrating in our enclosure.
I looked at him, wondering what he meant. Then the ground jolted and we began
to lower. We are now standing on a small island that sank deeper into the
ground, the smell if mud as clear as day but unable to see anything as it’s
dark. I looked at him again and only saw a pair of green eyes floating next to
me, but I knew he’s there. He still had a firm hold on my wrists and I can hear
him breathing.
We continued to go down, deeper and deeper, the darkness getting more black,
the air getting more cold that I shivered. Eventually we touched ground
unsmooth, I almost fell over. It was still dark but further away I could see a
small rectangle of light. The air is still cold but slightly warmer.
“You need to wait here.” He said as he guided me of the small island.
I watched him go towards the small rectangular light and suddenly remember he
hasn’t told me his name.
“Wait.” I called and he stopped “You haven’t told me your name.”
His head turned at an angle so I could see his pointed, hooked nose in
profile. “Elpha.” He said and continued walking until he was a small silhouette
against the light.

Minutes turned into hours as I waited for Elpha to return. I had given up the
hope of untying the rope and sat down. It’s still dark here so there’s nothing
around me to occupy my mind. Thoughts tried to invade my mind but I pushed them
away. They’re thought that I don’t want to think of, memories I want to forget.
As my eyes begin to close I saw two shapes appear in the light. Suddenly I
didn’t feel so tired. The shapes became bigger as they came nearer and I
recognised the shape of Elpha but didn’t know who he was with.
Light suddenly filled my enclosure and it was white and grey. And large. I
was sitting in the middle of it, feeling my cheeks blush as I realised I was
sitting on grass. As Elpha’s face came into view he wasn’t amused, but his
company smiled at me, making me feel a little better.
Elpha’s company was taller than him. He looked to be just over six foot tall.
He was slim and had more meat on his bones. Unlike Elpha, this man preferred to
stay smooth and have some more clothing on. He’s wearing a pure white pair of
trousers and no single hair on his boarding chest. His skin was well tanned and
his biceps well toned. Looking at his face he was more like a child than a grown
man.. His eyes are baby blue and he had a smooth head with little hair growing.
When I look at Elpha, it was hard to believe that such a normal looking man
could be living here. I truly have escaped.
“Welcome my girl.” He said, his voice deeper that Elpha’s but smooth and
relaxing and assuring.
He clicked his fingers and the rope disappeared from my wrists. Taking the
opportunity, I slipped my arms through the holes and adjusted the dress. Then my
eyes caught the redness on my wrists.
“Don’t be alarmed. My medic has a cream that will deal with that.” He said
“Who are you? Where am I?” I asked
“I’m Ricky and you’re in a kingdom so deep under the Scottish Boarders that
no one knows about it. Welcome to Feather’s Land.”
“Feather’s Land?” I raised my eyebrow at him.
Ricky was momentarily embarrassed but composed himself quickly and said “My
great-great Grandfather found a couple of feathers at the time he discovered
this land. So he called it Feather’s Land.”
“Right.”
“Please join us on the way back. I need to talk to you about your encounter
with the creatures.”
“Don’t they have a name?” I asked as I joined them.
We started to walk towards the rectangular light. I was enjoying the freedom
of swinging my arms as I walked.
“We’ve never given them names.” Answered Ricky
“But surely they would want to be called something other than creatures.” I
said
“Maybe but never known another name for them. All we ever see is the red
eyes, yet they have a body. They must have otherwise we wouldn’t be able to
fight them like any other human.”
“Perhaps they’re like Elpha. In the dark he has green eyes right?”
“Right.” Said Elpha. “But they are not my kind.”
“If you’ve never seen their bodies than how do you know?”
“Because of the eyes. They have red eyes, I have green.”
“Doesn’t mean anything, at least not to me. They could quite simply change
the colour into tricking you.”
“Girl!” Said Ricky and he stopped walking, making me and Elpha stop. “You do
have some logic but you’ve only just met them. We’ve fought them for a while and
I assure you they are not like Elpha.”
“Okay.” I said putting my hands up a little to say I surrender.
We continued walking in silence.
I’ve left some logic out. They’re more human than they think.
